Do you want to create a multi-functional towel bar that doubles as a towel rack and also lets you show some decorative flair? This clean and easy board and peg approach is made to build or order and gives you dozens of decorative alternatives.
The Design Idea
The Peg Rail by Donovan is a functional conversation piece and a space saver with an interchangeable design. Depending on the space where you wish to mount it, the towel bar can be assembled in any size, using the wood of your choice, or you can order a pre-made peg rail. The design idea features a wood rail with four or more pegs drilled through the rail and into the wall. The finishing decorative embellishment options complete the design.
What You Will Need
For the pictured Peg Rail by Donovan, you will need hand tools, an oak rail, paint or stain, pegs, screws, #220 grit sandpaper, molly screws, and decorative embellishments including towels and anything that can hang on the pegs.
How to Build the Peg Rail
- Decide on the length for your peg rail. Measure and mark the area on the wall where you plan to mount the peg rail.
- Sand the wood rail. For a smooth and interesting edge detail for the peg rail you will need a router, or for a traditional shaker style, leave the edges square.
- Paint or stain the peg rail to match indoor molding and trim (unless you want to purchase a pre-made rail at your local hardware store). Oak is usually available at most home centers in various lengths and widths. The pictured peg rail is made from oak, 41"L x 2.5"H x 1"W with 3"L pegs.
- Drill the peg holes, drilling half way through the wood using a forsner bit. Then drill the screw holes within at least two or three of the peg holes (depending on the length of the rail). Mount the rail with screws into the wall, preferably where there are studs. If you cannot line up the holes with studs, use molly screws.
- Place the pegs in the holes. The pegs will usually stay in without glue if you want to be able to disassemble the peg rail later.
Decorative Embellishments
Gather decorative items and rearrange them on the pegs. Start with necessary bathroom towels and then use the remaining pegs to create a warm design that matches your room. Bathroom sponges hang nicely from the pegs along with back scratchers and baskets holding bath items. For the pictured ocean theme, the peg rail holds a fisherman’s net, fish pottery for washcloths, shells, and fishing floats. Use the net to display shells, anchors, or other ocean-themed ornaments.
Other Design Ideas
Other design ideas for your own peg rail towel bar alternative:
- Visit the local bath shop and load up on a basket of soaps, lotions, and sponges to hang on your new peg rail.
- Tie netting or sheer fabric scarves onto the pegs.
- Add ambience with scented hanging candles. This keeps the bathroom smelling fresh, and when guests arrive, light the candles for ambience.
- Use the pegs for guest robes and place matching slippers into a hanging basket.
- Head to your favorite gifts and collectibles shops to look for other great design items that hang. Look for complementary themes and colors to your existing room.
Keep it Functional
Have fun with your new peg rail, but keep it functional. Make sure at least two pegs are reserved for towels and they can hang on the pegs without a conflict. The pegs are also great for temporarily hanging clothing items while you are using the space.
